Carbohydrate Synthetic Chemist
Sussex Research Laboratories Inc. is seeking candidates with extensive work experience in multi-step synthesis of carbohydrate-based molecules. Preferred candidates will be capable of independently proposing, designing, planning and executing practical and scalable (gram to kilogram) multi-step synthetic methods to access novel carbohydrate-based compounds including oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. A strong organic/carbohydrate chemistry background, a knowledge of the carbohydrate literature and an ability to synthesize, purify and characterize carbohydrate-based molecules is required.
Education & Experience
- A Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry with a minimum of 3 years of relevant post-graduate experience in private industry or an M.Sc. with a minimum of 5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in private industry (experience may be substituted for education).
- Entitlement to Work in Canada: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A security clearance to access the Employer’s premises, will be conducted by the RCMP on behalf of our landlord, the National Research Council of Canada (“NRC”).
Scientific/Technical Requirements
- The successful candidate must be a resourceful and proactive individual who is able to work as a team player in a dynamic environment with tight deadlines.

- Solid background in carbohydrate chemistry and glycosylation with in-depth knowledge of carbohydrate chemistry reactions and mechanisms.
- In-depth practical ability to purify products via column chromatography and interpret data (HPLC, Proton NMR and Mass Spectra) to support proposed molecular structure.
- Review research papers and intellectual property literature
- Must have excellent writing and communication skills, organizational skills and perform independently with the ability to follow directions.
- Participate in planning and strategy meetings with company research chemists.
- Experience in the synthesis of stable isotope-labeled organic molecules would be an asset.
- Experience in the synthesis of peptides would be an asset.
- Experience in the use of glycosyl transferases and chemoenzymatic synthesis of carbohydrate-based molecules be an asset.
Peptide Chemist
Sussex Research Laboratories Inc. is seeking a motivated individual to join our multi-talented synthesis team focused on development and optimization of glycosylated therapeutic molecules. You will utilize automated and manual peptide synthesis methods, perform HPLC purification, lyophilisation and LC-MS analysis to generate target molecules and propose alternative strategies to overcome synthetic challenges. Ideally, you have experience in solution and solid phase organic synthesis. You are capable of independently designing, developing, trouble-shooting and scaling (gram to kilogram) practical synthetic routes to modified peptide targets. You have a strong organic chemistry background and the ability to plan and execute complex syntheses.
